๐ UNDERSTANDING DOOR BACKSET MONTREALโ 2 3/8″ vs 2 3/4″ ๐
๐ DO YOU KNOW YOUR DOOR BACKSET? (IMPORTANT DETAIL MOST PEOPLE MISS)
Many clients donโt realize that when installing or replacing a lock, one small detail makes a big difference: the backset.
๐ What is a backset?
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole where the lock or handle is installed.
๐ THE TWO STANDARD SIZES
โ๏ธ 2 3/8″ (60mm)
โข Common on older residential doors
โข Found in older homes, condos, and apartments
โข Typical on locks installed between 1980โ2000
โ๏ธ 2 3/4″ (70mm)
โข Standard on most newer doors (2000โtoday)
โข Common on commercial doors
โข Used for offices, storefronts, and heavier doors
โข Provides better spacing for larger and stronger hardware
โ ๏ธ WHY IT MATTERS
Installing the wrong backset can lead to:
โข Misaligned locks (off-center installation)
โข Weak security or improper function
โข Extra labor and costly door modifications
โข Need to push or alter the latch deeper into the door
๐ Many residential locks are adjustable (twist or pull latch),
but not all locks are adjustableโespecially commercial-grade hardware.
๐ RESIDENTIAL vs ๐ฌ COMMERCIAL
๐ Residential Doors
โข Older doors: usually 2 3/8″
โข Newer doors: now standard at 2 3/4″
๐ฌ Commercial Doors
โข Most require 2 3/4″
โข Some older doors (pre-2000) may still use 2 3/8″
โข If a 2 3/8″ latch is required, it often needs to be special ordered
